Painting over a previously painted surface is the most common scenario in any repaint job, and it's also where most DIY results fall short. The new coat looks fine for a few months, then the edges start lifting, patches blister, or the colour reads uneven no matter how many coats you apply. The cause is almost always in what happened before the brush touched the wall, not what happened after.
Why surface prep matters more than the paint itself
Paint adhesion depends entirely on what it's bonding to. A clean, sound, lightly abraded surface gives the new coat something to grip. A dusty, glossy, chalky or flaking surface gives it nothing. The quality of the paint you choose matters less than the condition of the surface underneath it.
This is doubly true when painting over a surface that's already seen several coats. Each layer adds weight, and layers applied over poorly prepared surfaces compound the problem over time. At some point, the whole system starts to fail from the inside out.
Step 1: Assess what you're working with
Before touching anything, work out what type of paint is already on the surface. Oil-based and water-based (acrylic) paints don't play well together without the right primer in between. Apply water-based paint directly over oil-based and you'll often see adhesion failure within a season.
The quick test: dampen a cloth with methylated spirits and rub a small patch. If paint comes off on the cloth, it's water-based. If it stays put, it's oil-based. This one step saves a lot of rework.
Also check for:
- Flaking or peeling sections that need scraping back
- Chalky residue (common on older exterior paint), which signals oxidation
- Mould or mildew, which must be treated before painting over it
- Deep cracks or holes that need filling and sanding flush
Step 2: Clean the surface thoroughly
Grease, grime and dust prevent bonding. On interior walls, wipe down with a sugar soap solution and allow to dry completely before sanding. On exterior surfaces, a pressure wash is faster and more effective, but give the surface at least 24 hours to dry before you proceed.
Don't skip this step because the surface looks clean. Cooking residue in kitchens, hand oils in hallways and sunscreen residue on exterior trim are often invisible but will cause adhesion failure. Clean it regardless.
Step 3: Sand and repair
Sanding serves two purposes: it dulls the gloss on the existing coat so the new paint can grip, and it smooths any texture variation left by old brush marks or roller stipple. Use 120-grit sandpaper on walls and 80-grit on any areas where you're feathering in repairs.
Fill cracks and holes with a quality interior or exterior filler depending on where you're working. Sand the filled areas flush once dry. Spot-prime any bare filler before applying full coats. Skipping the spot prime leaves visible dull patches in the final finish, regardless of how many topcoats you apply.

Step 4: Prime correctly
Priming is not optional. It's the layer that actually connects your new paint to the old surface, and it determines how evenly the topcoat covers. A good primer seals chalk, prevents stains bleeding through, and improves adhesion on difficult surfaces.
Use an oil-based primer if you're painting over an oil-based surface and switching to water-based topcoats. Use a water-based primer if everything is acrylic. If there's any moisture staining or tannin bleed from timber, use a shellac-based stain blocker rather than a standard primer. One coat of the right product is worth more than three coats of the wrong one.
Spot priming over repairs is the minimum. Full-coat priming is the right call any time you're making a significant colour change, covering stains, or working on a surface that hasn't been painted in more than 10 years.
Step 5: Apply the new paint properly
Once the surface is prepped and primed, the application is the easy part. Two thin coats outperform one thick coat every time. Thick coats dry slowly, sag on vertical surfaces and trap solvents that cause wrinkling. Thin coats dry faster, bond better and allow each layer to cure fully before the next one goes on.
Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second. "Dry to touch" and "dry enough for a second coat" aren't the same thing. Check the manufacturer's recoat time on the tin and stick to it. Rushing this step is one of the most common causes of poor final results.
Choosing the right sheen matters too. A gloss or semi-gloss over a previously low-sheen surface will highlight any surface imperfections you missed during prep.
